Bursting into dance
Echoing the “Soka” exhibition, the Basque Cultural Institute gave carte blanche to photographer Gabrielle Duplantier. Between October 2014 and summer 2015, she travelled the length and breadth of the Basque Country to photograph different Basque Dance events and especially its intrinsic ritual practices. The fruit of her exploratory travels is presented in the Biarritz Media Library from 3rd to 25th September 2015.
Born in 1978, Gabrielle Duplantier studied art and art history at Bordeaux Faculty of Fine Arts. At that time, photography was an ancillary passion but once she graduated, Gabrielle decided to focus on her work as a photographer. She went to Paris where she worked as a photographer’s assistant and still photographer on film sets. In 2002, she came back to live in the Basque Country and, inspired by this vibrant and enigmatic land, she decided to record a series of images in which landscapes, characters, domestic and wild animals took on an air of impressionist visions. From often uneven shots to darkroom experiments, it was some time before her personal photographic style emerged: inspired by painters, an intimate, essentially feminine universe that seeks to draw out the ordinary from unique scenes with a sober touch of black and white. Alongside her various collaborations with the press, publishing companies and musicians, Gabrielle continues her personal work on women’s portraits, one of her favourite subjects, and Portugal, where she often travels back to her roots.
